Great Escape: Wine 101 with the Girls

Let a trained sommelier help take the mystery out of wine selection.

Planning to take in a glass of wine with your girlfriends? Why not do so under the guidance of a seasoned sommelier who can help you fully appreciate your selections? Here are a few opportunities for connoisseurs and novices alike to take in a glass of vino and take away a tidbit or two about how best to enjoy it.

John Cowley & Sons Eighth Anniversary Wine Tasting

Join sommelier Mike Larranaga at 7 p.m. March 23 at in downtown Farmington for Cowley's Eighth Anniversary Wine Tasting. Reservations are recommended for the event, which will include four tastings accompanied by four courses of  appetizers presented by Chef Zach, along with a lively discussion about fine wine. Cost is $30 per person.

Take in the Great Lakes region’s finest

Oakland Community College’s Culinary Studies Institute will host its annual Great Lakes Great Wine Walk Around Tasting on May 19. Two dozen judges will attend to sample 500 wines at the college in Farmington Hills. Represented will be wines that enjoy the unique climate of the Great Lakes. Wineries from Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario will be invited to enter. The public is invited to attend for a $50 donation to finish all 500 opened bottles while enjoying appetizers prepared by local chefs. Sample the Lark’s vast wine collection

The Lark restaurant in West Bloomfield has long been known for its fine cuisine, but not to be overlooked are its wine offerings. The Lark’s wine cellar is stocked with more than 1,000 selections from around the world, selected by sommelier and restaurant proprietor Jim Lark.
