Million Dollar Maisons

Have a generous home shopping budget? Check out our finds this week!

Ever had a song stuck in your head? This week, If I Had a Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladies was the haunting melody of the day as we tracked down homes for sale in Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield and Birmingham with price tags right around a cool million.

What does a million dollars buy these days? Maybe not happiness, but luxury and space for sure. The homes featured here run the gamut from waterfront properties to sophisticated downtown living to an estate surrounded by four acres of land that would look perfectly natural on the side of a mountain in Colorado.

Inside these homes, you'll find elegant design and careful construction using the finest materials, such as imported stone, marble, granite and hardwoods. Lavish, impressive entryways are the norm, with grand sweeping staircases and millwork to die for. Huge gourmet kitchens with top-of-the-line appliances and ample space for seating and entertaining are a cook's dream.

Many have impressive libraries and office spaces, home theaters, master suites large enough to house a small family and extravagant bathrooms with Italian tile and whirlpool tubs. Outside, some of these homes have lakefront views and access, while others include swimming pools, tennis courts and cabanas. Gorgeous decks and patios add to the ambiance, and the landscapings are well-designed and maintained.

So if you have a million dollars and want to buy someone a house, it won't be difficult to spend it on one right here in your own neck of the woods. At the very least, you'll have a specific house in mind the next time you hear that song.
