Moms Talk: Dressing our Daughters

A recent controversy over racy clothing for little girls has us wondering how you dress your daughter.

Last week, Abercrombie & Fitch took plenty of heat over advertising a padded, push-up bathing suit top for little girls. On its Abercrombie Kids website, the company only offers two piece bathing suits for girls, all of which are bikini style. Some of the tops feature removable padding; all the tiny bottoms have string-tied sides.

The criticism, of course, is that the company is sexualizing young girls with their clothing lines. In 2010, the American Psychological Association released a report that concluded – among other negative consequences – that early sexualization of young girls is linked to eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression.

So we wondered: Are you conscious of buying your daughter clothing that is more child-like? Do you go with the style flow? Or is all this talk about girls and clothing much ado about nothing?
