Registration Open for Camp Riley

Farmington Youth Assistance offers this unique camp, which combines fun and education.

Parents in Farmington can register their children for Farmington Youth Assistance’s outdoor-based summer camp, Camp Riley, on June 6 and June 14, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at located at 28100 Farmington Rd.

Farmington Youth Assistance (FYA) and YMCA representatives will be present to provide information about camp activities and discuss cost structure for residents in the Farmington and Farmington Hills communities.

“This camp is unique to metro Detroit,” said Pam Lyle, FYA caseworker. “It’s the only one that we know of that combines fun outdoor activities with teaching components that often result in increased academic achievement.”

Facilitated with the help of the Farmington YMCA, Camp Riley lasts nine weeks and can accommodate 80 youth entering kindergarten through fourth grade in the fall. Kids are assigned books based on a weekly theme and an integrated, interactive curriculum is tailored to their needs. In an end-of-year assessment during the 2010 camp, 54 percent of the 46 campers evaluated met academic achievement expectations in English, language arts and math, and 39 percent exceeded expectations.

Children also swim, play sports, participate in team building exercises and achieve recognition for displaying honesty, respect, responsibility and caring.

Camp runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June 20 to August 19 at . Three days of the week are dedicated to field trips.

The camp is $135 per week and financial assistance is available to those who qualify. Participants must be currently enrolled in .

Farmington Youth Assistance is a nonprofit organization committed to preventing juvenile delinquency, child neglect and child abuse through community involvement. It provides summer camp activities, casework counseling, family education, mentoring, skill building and youth recognition programs.
