Saturday Market Focus is Kids

Samples, balloons and story time make the Winter Market Children's Day a special event.

Bring the kids to Saturday's Power Road Winter Farmers Market for samples, giveaways, story time and an artist making balloon animals, starting at 9 a.m. in , 23020 Power Road in Farmington.

has free cookie coupons for the first 50 children to visit their booth, where they'll be offering samples of baked goods. Little ones are invited to story time with the ; due to limited space, each of the four sessions between 1 and 2 p.m. is limited to 20 participants.

Market master Jean Smith said one popular vendor is not available this weekend. George's Cutlery Repairs & Sharpening Services' spot will be taken by Emma's Sugar & Spice Confections, which offers homemade cookies and other baked goods. The Feb. 5 market will include more than 15 vendors, she said.

"Earth's Legacy has awesome home-made herbal tea blends," Smith said. "She always has a flavor of the week and free samples."

Kapnick Orchards, one of the larger vendors from the May through November Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market, has been a winter market regular as well, Smith said. They'll have fresh apples, apple cider, jams and jellies and baked goods on hand. Smith said market-goers will also find one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor in the Pottery by Carol booth.

Also on Saturday's list of vendors: Garden Gate Farms (natural grass-fed pork, beef and chicken, eggs, produce and more), Itza Bloomin' Chocolate Company (handmade chocolates and truffles), Photography by Vicki (framed art and photo cards), The Olive Grove (flavors oils and vinegars, artisan pasta), Relic Soap Company, Aline's Soy Candles, James Creek Sutlery (organic custom spice blends), Cheeky Monkey (organic coffee, coffee beans, baked goods) and Cookie Cutter Tweets & Treat the Dog (hand-made dog treats and bird feeders).

A special children's market basket will be given away, and forms will be available for the Feb. 19 Home Made from Scratch Pie Contest. Grand prize is a $100 gift card to Whole Foods Market in West Bloomfield and a recyclable grocery bag filled with groceries. The runner-up will receive a $25 gift card and recyclable bag.
