Sons of Norway to Host Aug. 21 Memorial for Shooting, Bombing Victims

Nordkap Lodge of the Sons of Norway organizes an event that coincides with Norway's national day of mourning.

To honor a public day of mourning for 77 people killed in the July 22 Oslo bombing and Utøya Island shootings in Norway, the public is invited to join the Sons of Norway in Farmington Hills Aug. 21 for a memorial observance.

The remembrance gathering will be hosted by Detroit’s Nordkap Lodge of the Sons of Norway at 3 p.m. at the , 22398 Ruth St.

The service will feature the honorary consul of Norway to Michigan, Dennis Flessland of Huntington Woods, who will offer remarks from Norway Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. A tree planted on the Swedish Club grounds will be dedicated to the memory of the Norwegian victims.

Participants will be invited to share comments and help lay memorial flowers around the tree. 

In the Norwegian tradition, the service and tree dedication will be followed by a social hour where coffee and refreshments will be served.

August 21 has been declared a national day of mourning in Norway by the government, in liaison with opposition parties. A memorial concert has been scheduled in Oslo.
