Time to Save on Back to School Deals in Farmington, Hills

We've got money-saving and time-saving ideas.

It is now the middle of August, the summer is nearly over. When September rolls around, the pools will close and the schools will open.

This is an exciting time at the Lucksted house. Our oldest is headed to high school and our youngest starts kindergarten.

Trying to get a handle on what each child needs to have a wonderful school year can be a daunting task. Between shopping for school supplies, changing back to a “school” schedule during the day and preparing for the happy chaos that is getting kids out the door, on the bus, with homework and lunch boxes, all on time, can be overwhelming.

I’m taking a new tac this year. Instead of running off to the mall to scoop up new clothes, shoes and backpacks, I’m taking inventory. I was pleasantly surprised to see that both kids already have backpacks that are in good shape to start the year. If I were shopping for a new one, I would visit for 25 percent off Adidas and Nike backpacks through Aug. 18 or for 25-50 percent off all in stock backpacks through Aug. 20.

While we will get new shoes and a few new tops, we’re delaying our “back to school shop” until late September or early October. If you are doing your shopping now, has 40 percent off Osh Kosh for kid’s size 4-7 and character backpacks for $17.99. is offering their Super Cash deal where you get $10 in Super Cash for every $20 you spend through Aug. 18.

Farmington-Farmington Hills Patch guest blogger talks about getting your child to be more independent. Letting them take responsibility for getting out of bed each morning is a great place to start. When our now 14-year-old was in second grade, we presented him with an alarm clock and, since the age of seven, he’s been getting himself up and out of bed without assistance. Worried they will turn off the alarm and go back to bed? Place the clock on the opposite side of their room, meaning they have to leave their bed to turn it off.

Clothing battles are another morning activity that can be a challenge. Instead of having a daily battle (or a daily hunt) for what to wear, I bought each child a sweater organizer to hang in their closet. Over the weekend I spend a few minutes with each child selecting outfits. Top, bottom, socks and under garments all fit in one slot.

Presto! Five outfits ready to go. Your child gets the freedom to wear what they’d like on a particular day, no more racing through the house wondering what to wear. What I use is similar to this organizer from .

While we have yet to receive teacher wish lists from classrooms, there are generic wish lists posted for each grade level. Find your students school here. Click on your student’s school, then on the left side of the page you will see “quick links” and select “student supply list”. There are lists for each grade. Glue sticks, hand sanitizer, napkins, markers and facial tissues are hot items for the K-4 set.

CVS has Kleenex facial tissue two for $3; this is part of the spend $30 and get a $10 gas card promotion. Visit CVS at ; ; ;; and .
