'Tour the World in Our Hometown' During Heritage Week

The annual observance of diversity in Farmington and Farmington Hills begins today.

This week brings several events designed to bring a greater awareness to diversity in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

The theme for the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council's 12th annual Heritage Week, Oct. 16-22, is "Tour the World in our Hometown." These events aim to unite the community by bringing people together to share their backgrounds:

On Wednesday, will host an International Coffee House from 6 p.m.-9 p.m., with storyteller Rosie Chapman giving an interactive performance that will involve members of the audience and musical instruments. The choir and dancers will also perform.

Sponsored by Mentobe Cafe in downtown Farmington, the Coffee House is free. Tea and sweets will be available for purchase.

Book lovers will gather at the on Thursday at 7 p.m., for a discussion of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, by Helen Simonson. The novel centers around the courtship of a retired British officer and a widow of Pakistani descent, and touches on cultural and religious issues. Admission to the book discussion is free.

Students will take part in a panel discussion at at noon on Friday. The theme is "Engaging Suburban Students in Dialogues on Diversity," and the cost is  $10. Entertainment will be provided by Brandon Grant, leader of an award-winning jazz trio that has performed at the Detroit International Jazz Festival.
