Weekend Planner: Veteran's Celebration, Alternative Christmas Fair, and Jazz Concert

Patch tells you what's happening this weekend around Farmington and Farmington Hills.

Daylight Savings Time might have seemed to make your week a little longer than usual, but Friday has finally arrived! It's time to get out and enjoy it.  All week long, we have shared our daily picks for fun and interesting events happening in the area to help you plan your weekend adventures.

Where: 

When: Friday at 11 a.m.

Why go: Veteran's Day is set aside to honor veterans, and the City of Farmington Hills Senior Division plans to do just that on Friday. All veterans in the area and their guests are welcome to attend. There will be an honor guard ceremony conducted by Wixom VFW and , keynote speakers and recognition of Veterans. After a special lunch, attendees will enjoy dancing to the Mike Wolverton Band.

Where: 

When: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.

Why go: Mercy High School takes a unique approaches to their fall play this year, as they transform their cafeteria into a speakeasy for an audience-participatory murder mystery. The pre-show gets it started with feature singers and a piano player. As audience members arrive they will receive an envelope full of money as a "gift from Louie." A murder occurs and the audience must help solve the mystery. Audience members can use their gifts of money to buy information from the characters during intermission. If you use your money wisely, you just might be able to solve the crime.

Where: 

When: Friday or Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., or Sunday from 1 - 5 p.m.

Why go: The Friends book sale is always a great time to get some deep discounted prices on books and media. The feast of bargains includes high quality and gently used books for everyone, CDs, DVDs, and audio books. All items will be $3 or less.  As an added bonus, all proceeds will benefit theFriends of the Farmington Library.

Where: 

When: Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. 

Why go: The concept of the Alternative Fair is to ease your holiday stress, help raise funds for non-profit groups, and give a gift that is meaningful. There will be 55 vendors offering unique gifts, and the groups get to keep 100 percent of the profits. A sampling of items you can purchase include: Creative Kits for Children (Arts & Scraps), handcrafted jewelry (Hope Endeavors), holiday cards (Forgotten Harvest and The Pink Fund), or decorative baskets (The Salvation Army). The Fair will also have African crafts and fabrics, Alpaca wool scarves, handmade gifts, baked goods and much more.

When:  Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Why go: The Farmington Musicale presents the Black Orchid Quartet for "Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon."  The Quartet features pianist Patti Jones, a Farmington Musicale member, along with a drum, saxophone, string bass and flute accompaniment.  At this free concert, the Quartet will perform light jazz music to ease you into your Sunday afternoon.
