Farmington Area Junior Girl Scouts Earn Bronze Award

Troop 41092's project benefits homeless animals at the Michigan Humane Society.

A group of Junior Girl Scouts from Farmington and Farmington Hills have earned a Bronze Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting.

Troop 41092 members Anju Anil, Jahnavi Barla, Abby Barone, Megan Cromwell, Manasvi Goli, Mckenzie Hanson, Amber Hardy, Sydney Hoffmeyer, Madeleine Kmieciak, Emma Magner, Lia Munson, Abby Thomson, Neha Thummalapally, and Holly Truittm, led by Wendy Munson and Karen Kmieciak, completed work on their award this spring.

Tasked with planning and facilitating a service project based on a need they saw in their community, the girls decided to reach out and help the population of homeless animals in the metro Detroit area. They put together a can and bottle collection drive in Farmington neighborhoods to raise funds for the materials to make crate blankets for homeless cats and dogs at the Michigan Humane Society (MHS).

As part of their collection drive, troop members also requested various items that the MHS always needs, such as food, treats, and office supplies. They were astounded by the response from their neighbors.

During one of their meetings, the girls put together fleece blankets in various sizes that were not only comfortable for the animals, but also safe for them to chew. Some Scouts also used recycled boxes to make houses designed to keep cats occupied while they wait for adoption.

On May 24, Troop members delivered blankets, boxes and other items, along with a check for $435 – proceeds from their bottle and can drive – to the Michigan Humane Society’s Berman Center in Westland.

The Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 41092 would like to thank their generous neighbors for supporting them during their Bronze Award service project. They would also like to thank the Michigan Humane Society for their ongoing dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable animals.
