City of Farmington Hills Plans Book Discussions, Wellness Fair and More for Seniors in September

Adults ages 50 and older can participate in these events, which are hosted at the Costick Center.

Adults ages 50 and older can learn ballroom dancing, discuss popular books, take in a movie and more in September.

These activities are offered by the at the on 11 Mile, east of Middlebelt:

Book Discussion. Thursday, Sept. 6, 1 p.m. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Paperback copies are available in advance for checkout.

First Friday Ballroom. Friday, Sept. 7, 3 p.m. Enjoy ballroom dancing featuring the Mike Wolverton Band with buffet dinner included. All levels of experience and adult ages, singles and couples welcome. Admission is $9 by Sept. 4, $10 after, $1 discount to members. 

Lunch and the DIA. Monday, Sept. 10, 12 p.m. Enjoy a slide presentation on Women Artists with a DIA guest speaker. Fee is $6 in advance, $8 at the door.

Shredding for Safety. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Bring in up to four grocery bags of sensitive documents to be shredded free of charge in the Costick Center parking lot C. Drive up only. No junk mail or trash.

Travel Show. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 10:30 a.m. Join Rybicki Tours to preview fall and winter travel opportunities including packages for local and long distance trips. 

Law Day. Thursday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Get information about wills and trusts, family law, Medicaid, reverse mortgages, foreclosure, and credit card theft with a representative of the Oakland County Bar Association. No cost, but advance registration is required. Lunch included. 

Total Wellness Fair. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Celebrate life after 50 at this free community event that features informative exhibits, health screenings, interactive demonstrations, and all the latest products and services, plus great door prizes. Free lunch to all who are 60 or better, served at 1 p.m.

Newcomer Welcome Tour. Thursday, Sept. 20, 10:30 a.m. Residents of Farmington and Farmington Hills 50 and better can learn more about services, events, trips, classes, and volunteer opportunities. Includes a welcome packet with a coupon for a complimentary lunch, fitness class or speaker series class.

Friday’s Film. Friday, Sept. 21, 12 p.m. Enjoy lunch, candy, popcorn, and a beverage and watch The Big Miracle. Fee is $5 in advance, $7 at the door. 

Why is My Vision Blurry? Tuesday, Sept. 25, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Learn about cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, dry eyes, and more from an ophthalmologist with Cataract & Eye Consultants of Michigan. No cost.
