Community Rallies Behind Meteorologist After Losing Eye in Fireworks Accident

After a fireworks incident in Iowa on the 4th of July, WXYZ's Senior Meteorologist, Dave Rexroth has received tons of support via social media.

Dave Rexroth was on vacation in Iowa City, IA for the Fourth of July when he lost his eye in a fireworks accident in.

Rexroth is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday in Iowa City and will receive a prosthetic eye, The Oakland Press reports.

“Depending on the extent of the injury, what happened or where it is, doctors usually run a CAT scan and check for foreign bodies,” Beaumont Ophthalmologist Barbara Kuczynski told the newspaper. “But the main thing to do is close up the rupture or the area that’s open.”

The husband and father of three is expected to fully recover and will resume his position as chief meteorologist of WXYZ in September, the station said.

Rexroth’s and WXYZ’s  Facebook pages have received nearly 4,000 comments combined since the incident.
