Getting Around: Watch for Traffic Tie-Ups, Pedestrians in Farmington, Farmington Hills

Road construction, the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market and a hazardous waste collection are all part of a big weekend.

If you're planning to be out and about in Farmington and Farmington Hills this weekend, pack your patience – and keep a sharp eye out for pedestrians and traffic back-ups.

These events and activities are likely to cause some congestion:

Farmington

Downtown parking

Finding a spot in and around downtown Farmington Saturday morning will likely be challenging, with the farmers market opening and a youth baseball league parade going on at roughly the same time.

Good bets are the parking lots along Orchard Street behind the Downtown Farmington Center and at the Maxfield Training Center, Thomas and Warner Streets. Download a map of all parking areas from the Farmington Downtown Development Authority website

Remember to watch for and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. 

Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market

Opening day at the begins Saturday at 8:45 a.m., with a brief ceremony and ringing of the market bell to open the season. This year, due to a lawn replacement project, so the street in front of – along with the parking spaces – will be closed and filled with vendors. The market closes at 2 p.m.

South Farmington Baseball Parade

Players and their families will gather at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, then walk across Grand River, east on Oakland St., north on Farmington Rd., then east on Shiawassee Rd. to , where they'll celebrate the opening day for their season. Watch for pedestrians along the parade route and around the park during opening day activities. 

Farmington Hills

I-696/Orchard Lake construction

The Road Commission for Oakland County has announced  on Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. They're clearing a clogged drainage culvert that runs under the freeway and reshaping the ditches.

Hazardous Waste drop-off at

Expect traffic around Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge campus' Farmington Road entrance between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. Residents of Farmington Hills, Farmington, Novi, South Lyon, Lyon Township, Southfield, Walled Lake, and Wixom are all eligible – with a driver’s license or other proof of residency – to drop off hazardous waste in the northwest parking lot.
