Jewish War Veterans Honor Holocaust Memorial Center Director

Stephen Goldman is honored for his work over the last year at the Farmington Hills museum.

Executive Director Stephen M. Goldman has been honored by the Department of Michigan Jewish War Veterans 62nd Brotherhood Program.

The award, which honors outstanding community activists for their work in the community, was presented Feb. 23 at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park. Other honorees include: Hillers Markets President James Hiller, Hebrew Memorial Chapel Director Otto B. Dube and Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander.

Goldman’s selection is a result of his work at the Holocaust Memorial Center over the past year, ranging from the development and implementation of such exhibits as a travelling exhibit on display through the end of the month that focuses on the lives and achievements of a special band of World War II soldiers fighting a psychological war against the Nazis, to fundraising in conjunction with the Michigan Association of Russian-Speaking Jewry (MARJA) for the construction of a WWII Veterans Memorial.

He also has brought exposure to the Center and the local area by hosting such events as the Council of American Jewish Museums convention, which will be taking place Feb. 26-28.

Prior to his arrival at the Holocaust Memorial Center in 2009, Goldman served as Museum Director/Curator for the Florida Holocaust Museum, where he led a $13 million expansion program that saw the facility grow into the fourth largest Holocaust museum in the U.S. Under his guidance, the museum received accreditation from the prestigious Association of American Museums (AAM).

Goldman also has held a similar position as executive director with the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in Tulsa, Okla. He graduated with an M.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University (1971) and a B.A. from Brandeis University (1968).
