Ira Wing, WW II Navy Veteran, Dies at 98

The long-time Farmington Hills resident was a familiar face in Farmington Memorial Day parades.

Ira Wing, a U.S. Navy veteran who participated for more than 60 years in Farmington's annual Memorial Day parades, died Nov. 30. 

The 98-year-old Farmington Hills resident was a member of the Wixom VFW Post. He served in the African, Asiatic and European theatres during World War II. According to a 2011 story in the Farmington Observer, he had been part of the community's Memorial Day parade since 1945. 

The newspaper also profiled Ira and his wife, Gisele, in 2010, when they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. The couple marked their 73rd anniversary in August.

Visitation will be held Dec. 2, 2 p.m.-9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. VFW service, at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Dec. 3, 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. 

In addition to his wife, Mr. Wing is survived by his children Jeannine (George) Booth, Pauline (John) Lake, Yvonne (Robert) Pelachyk, Allan (Lisa) Wing and Joanne (Richard) Van Camp; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
