Letter to the Editor: Neighborhood House Says Thanks

Family support specialist Loretta Zahn says food donations go a long way toward helping needy families in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

To the editor:

On behalf of the Farmington/Farmington Hills Neighborhood House, I want to thank you for all the groceries you continue to donate.

To say that the current economy is dreadful is an understatement. The numbers of families who rely on local food pantries to get them through the month are increasing in alarming numbers.

It was reported in the May 2011 Oakland Press that currently one out of eight Oakland County families are now on food assistance programs and new rules have lowered the amount of assistance received. In the past nine years, the number of Oakland County families receiving food assistance has risen 359%. The need is great, but so is your generosity.

The items you donate, such as the Hamburger Helper are very helpful because that is the type of food that a family can use to make a whole meal. Spaghetti sauce and noodles or tuna and cream of mushroom soup can make a filling dinner too.

Once again thank you for caring enough for our less fortunate Farmington/Farmington Hills citizens to make a difference in their daily lives.
