Community Corner

VOTE YES FOR THE KIDS

As a 12-year Farmington homeowner, a parent of 3 students in FPS, and a volunteer in the schools and other local youth programs, I ask for a YES vote from my community members.
The kids don't get to vote for what happens in their schools, that is the responsibility of the adults in the community.  It is our responsibility to give the children of our community a chance for a successful future.  Our children will be competing for colleges and jobs with students who live in districts that already have what this bond will provide for our schools.
Face it, whatever your personal opinion is about computers, our students NEED to be fluent in current technology.  They will be expected to know how to use these tools in their education and their employment.  Please give them the chance to learn the technology of today and the future.
Since the incident in Newtown, our schools have had volunteers or staff as "security" at the front doors.  I have been one of these volunteers.  So, if you are sending your child to school, just know that the front door is being "secured" by a parent or noon supervisor.  This is better than an open door, but is it what you want for your child?  I have worked in corporations and non-profits that have better security for their "stuff" than we have for our children.
Upgrades to the classroom aka "learning environment" and the infrastructure are also crucial for academic success.  Have you seen the inside of our classrooms lately?  The district has done a great job at keeping costs down and using every desk and table until it is no longer useful/safe.  Have you taken your child to work with you lately?  I suspect that many of you work in an environment that is more conducive to productivity than our students use.  Wobbly desks and mismatched furniture convey a message to our students...we don't care about you and we don't value your education.
Please vote YES on August 6th, for the Kids.
