UPDATED: Livonia Woman Dies in Farmington Traffic Accident

One person appears to have died after a minivan hit a large tree on the east side of the road.

Farmington Public Safety officers are investigating a single vehicle accident that killed a 52-year-old Livonia woman at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

In an email sent to media at 6:40 a.m., Public Safety Director Bob Schulz said the woman's vehicle was traveling north at a high rate of speed on Farmington Road, when it slammed into a tree just south of Shiawassee.

Schulz said the Oakland County Medical Examiner will conduct tests for drugs and alcohol, and results will not be available for several weeks. The woman's name was not released; Schulz said she will be identified once family members have been notified.

Farmington Road was closed from Grand River to Shiawassee for several hours early Saturday morning, as investigators worked to determine how the accident happened. Witnesses said police covered the woman's body near the Shiawassee intersection, on the west side of the road. The vehicle landed on the east side of the road, closer to the middle of the block.

The crash, which woke neighbors, left the vehicle split in two and debris scattered up and down the road.
