Birmingham Student Has Tweet Trouble, Woman Arrested After Bloomfield Township Crash

Area police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt.

Police Respond to Threatening Tweet From Groves Student

A Groves High School student was taken in custody Friday morning, after he was accused of sending out a threatening tweet on the Twitter social media website, said Groves principal Fred Procter Friday.

In a note sent to parents, Procter said school officials were alerted overnight to "tweets of a threatening nature" generated by one of the school's underclassmen. The Beverly Hills Police Department was also alerted and able to "very quickly and appropriately" identify the source of the tweets and soon after took the student into custody, Procter said.

Teens Found on Roof of Former Northville Psychiatric Building

Northville Township Police dispatched to the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital on Seven Mile Road on Dec. 17 found five teens in the building. The teens told police they were checking it out after hearing about it on the Internet and radio. Police ticketed them all for trespassing.

Woman Arrested in Shoplifting Incident Faints

A 65-year-old woman was arrested at Kohl's at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 on charges of stealing $67 worth of face cream, according to a crime report. The loss prevention officer saw the woman select two bottles of cream and put them in the bottom of her cart, placing her purse on top, the report said. The loss prevention officer watched her as she went to her car after checking out; she then moved her purse and put the cream inside of her Kohl's shopping bag, the report said. The loss prevention officer then asked her to come back to the office, and she fainted, the report said. CEMS were called. The woman said she forgot to pay for the cream, and when she saw it in her cart, she decided to put it in her bag even though she knew it was wrong and that she should have returned to pay for it, the report said.

Woman With Six OWI Convictions Arrested After Crash in Bloomfield Township

Bloomfield Township police said they arrested a woman Sunday with six prior convictions for operating under the influence after she crashed her vehicle into a brick wall.

Julie Bakkila, 52, of Chassell, faces counts of operating while intoxicated, third offense, and driving with a suspended license, second offense, after the crash at about 3:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of South Miller Way, police reports said. She was also charged with felony possession of a loaded firearm, and possession of a stolen financial transaction device for credit cards and a checkbook officers found in the vehicle, according to reports.

Her criminal history includes misdemeanor and felony convictions for operating a vehicle while under influence, and two separate stints in Michigan prisons. Records show Bakkila served three years of a maximum six-year sentence for operating while intoxicated and fleeing and eluding police convictions in 1998 in Oakland County. She was released in August 2001, and returned to prison in March 2008 following a conviction in Houghton County for operating while under the influence of a controlled substance. She was sentenced to three years in prison and was discharged in December 2010.
