Camera Catches Arson at Coin Shop in Farmington Hills

Police extinguished a small fire, which caused heavy smoke inside the store.

Farmington Hills Police are looking for a suspect in connection with a small fire set early Friday morning at U.S. Coin Gallery on 12 Mile Road.

According to the report, an alarm drew police to the business at 3:10 a.m. Officers saw a shattered front glass door and smoke coming from inside the building. They put out a small fire just inside the door; Farmington Hills firefighters cleared the building because of heavy smoke.

The report indicated that a surveillance tape showed a tall, thin, light-skinned black man smash the door with a brick. He lit some type of accelerant in a container and threw it through the broken door, then left. The tape showed the man was wearing a two-tone gray jacket, long blue jean shorts, white socks, black shoes, a gray hat and gray scarf over his face, according to the report.

The owner of the business told police that similar incidents had been reported at other coin shops. Trenton Patch reported a "suspicious fire" in May that damaged a coin shop,
