Crime Report: Copper Theft, Drunk Driving Charges

The following arrest information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Two women from Detroit were arrested on alcohol-related charges and a Farmington Hills man on a charge of child endangerment, after police followed the young adults from a Farmington Hills liquor store Monday.

According to the report, officers were called to at Halsted and Grand River around 9:30 p.m., on a complaint of disorderly conduct by several men. They followed the men, who drove to a residence in the apartment complex. As police questioned the driver, a 19-year-old Hills resident, they saw a toddler in the back seat of the vehicle who was not belted into a car seat. The report indicated that police found an empty wine bottle and a full bottle of tequila in the vehicle. The driver faces charges of child endangerment; the Detroit women, ages 19 and 20, face charges of underage consumption. The child was released to the custody of a relative, because his mother, who was also in the vehicle, was too intoxicated to care for him.

Items stolen

A 28-year-old Southfield man told police that $135 in cash was stolen from his locker while he was at the on Monday, around 3:30 p.m. He said he had written the combination on the back of the lock that secured his locker.

A resident on Shadowglen Dr. told police that sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, someone got into his vehicle and took a GPS device, an amplifier and a black golf bag containing Taylor Made irons and Lynex clubs. According to the report, police found no signs of forced entry.

Breaking and entering

A resident on Greening St. told police she left home on Sept. 23 and returned Sunday evening to find about $1,550 in jewelry had been taken from her locked bedroom. According to the report, police found pry marks on a rear door and on the bedroom door.

A couple on Ontaga Ave. told police they left home on Sept. 24 at 11:15 a.m. and returned an hour and 15 minutes later to find someone had broken in and stolen around $2,000 worth of jewelry from their master bedroom. According to the report, the back door to the garage was kicked in, as was the door leading from the garage into the house.

Narcotics charges

A 25-year-old Livonia man was arraigned Monday on charges of narcotics possession, after being arrested Sunday on west M-5. According to the report, police responded to a call about a possible drunk driver Sunday evening on west M-5 near Farmington Rd. An officer saw the vehicle weaving in its lane and stopped the driver at M-5 and Halsted. The report indicated a small baggie was found in plain sight in a middle console, and another was found during a search of the driver. Police also found a needle and burned bottle cap with heroin residue in it. In addition to facing charges of possession of marijuana and narcotics paraphernalia, the driver was ticketed for failing to signal. He was released on personal bond.

A 25-year-old Novi man faces charges of narcotics paraphernalia and heroin possession, after police stopped his speeding vehicle on I-696 at Orchard Lake Rd. on Sunday afternoon. According to the report, an officer clocked the vehicle at 91 miles per hour, and the driver sped up to 96 miles per hour before being stopped. Before impounding the car, officers inventoried it and found a syringe on the floor of the driver's seat, and a baggie with heroin residue under the driver's side floor mat. The man was ticketed for speeding and arraigned on the drug charges Monday. Bond was set at $5,000.

Four men face narcotics and loitering charges Sept. 22, after an employee at reported suspicious people on the property. According to the report, officers found the men sitting in cars parked next to the school's Dumpster. Because there was a strong odor of marijuana, the vehicles were searched. Police found the remains of smoked marijuana cigarettes and two baggies of marijuana. The report indicated a 23-year-old Farmington Hills man and a 21-year-old Berkley man face charges of marijuana possession and loitering in a "student safety zone", defined in Michigan law as an area within 1,000 feet of a school; a 22-year-old and 21-year-old, both from Southfield, face charges of loitering in the "student safety zone".

Drunk driving arrest

A 44-year-old Livonia woman was arrested around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 22, after someone reported a possible drunk driver had just walked into on Grand River. According to the report, an officer watched as the woman drove over a curb while trying to leave the parking lot. A portable breath test showed the woman's blood alcohol was .19, which is more than that .08 legal limit.

Copper theft

The property manager for a vacant home on Oxford Ave. reported the theft of about $900 worth of copper plumbing, discovered on Sept. 21. According to the report, two weeks earlier, a maintenance person arrived to find the front door forced open, but nothing missing. While there was no sign of forced entry when the theft was discovered, a front window was unlocked and the screen appeared to be ajar.
