Crime Report: Driver With Xanax in Pocket Tells Police 'Those Aren't My Shorts'

Two West Bloomfield men, ages 19 and 20, face charges of possessing synthetic drugs with intent to distribute, following a traffic stop by on June 21. 

According to the report, police stopped the vehicle after the driver disobeyed a traffic signal on the M-5 ramp near Halsted. The report said that the driver and passenger both had difficulty keeping their eyes open and slurred speech. After a search of the driver turned up a bottle containing 14 Xanax pills in the pocket of the shorts he was wearing, the man told police, "Those aren't my shorts."

A search of the vehicle uncovered prescription bottles containing more than 200 Xanax pills, according to the report. In addition to the narcotics charges, the driver was ticketed for making a prohibited turn. 

Thefts from vehicles

A resident in the 32000 block of Glencove told police Monday that a mechanic who was checking her vehicle's loud exhaust discovered someone had removed the catalytic converter. According to the report, the resident told police the car had been parked overnight in a parking lot near her home.

A resident in the 30000 block of Timber Ridge Circle told police on June 21 that someone took an Apple iPad and two sets of wireless headphones out of her vehicle, while it was parked and locked in front of her residence. According to the report, there was no sign of forced entry, and the woman unlocked the vehicle to check it after she discovered the theft. 

An employee at a child care business on Orchard Lake Road told police she saw two men break into a vehicle parked in the business lot and take a woman's purse at around 4:15 p.m. on June 20. According to the report, the employee said the men got out of a gold, 4-door sport utility vehicle after parking in front of the building. After the theft, they headed north on Orchard Lake Rd., the report said. A purse was taken out of a second vehicle around the same time. 

Larceny

A 32-year-old Rochester Hills woman who was getting a manicure and pedicure at a business on Orchard Lake Rd. on Friday afternoon told police someone took three rings that she placed on the arm of a chair before her manicure. According to the report, the woman told police that she left the rings, including her diamond engagement ring and wedding band, behind when she went to dry her nails in another area of the salon, and they were missing when she returned. A salon manager told police that 24 employees and 25 clients were present at the time the rings were taken. 

A resident in the 24000 block of Verdant told police that two bicycles, valued at $120 each, were taken from a shed at around 1 p.m. on Thursday. According to the report, the 24-inch green Avigo 10-speed and 20-inch red Avigo were left unattended for a short time when the theft occurred. 

Breaking and entering

A resident on Polo Club Drive told police he returned home around 4 a.m. on June 20 to find items missing from his apartment. According to the report, three television sets and a video game system were taken.

Drunken driving charges

A 23-year-old West Bloomfield man faces charges of drunken driving, after his vehicle was stopped at 12 Mile and Rollcrest around 1 a.m. Friday. According to the report, an officer spotted the man's vehicle parked in a turn lane with hazard lights activated. As the officer approached, the vehicle took off east on 12 Mile, traveling 60 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. As he spoke to the driver, the officer reported, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol. A preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol was .16, which is twice the .08 legal limit. Police were not able to confiscate the man's driver's license, because of a pending drunken driving case in Royal Oak from April of this year. 

A 38-year-old Detroit man faces charges of drunken driving, a concealed weapons offense, marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license, after a citizen reported a possible intoxicated driver at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday. According to the report, police stopped the driver at Ontaga and Brandon after watching him drive through stop signs and hit a curb on Shiawassee. While searching the vehicle, officers found a 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun loaded with eight rounds of ammunition and two small bags of marijuana, the report indicated. A preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol was .12, which is more than the .08 legal limit. A check of the man's background turned up a prior drunken driving conviction from 2002, a current license suspension and a felony warrant for fleeing and eluding police in Southfield.

A 51-year-old Detroit man faces charges of drunken driving, after driving through a red light at Eight Mile and Grand River, and nearly colliding with a police cruiser. According to the report, the driver stopped in the middle of a traffic lane and told the officer he thought he was in the city of Southfield. A preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol was .14, more than the .08 legal limit. 

Mailbox vandalism

Police were called to the 29000 block of White Hall Drive Saturday morning, after an explosive device or large firework damaged a mailbox. According to the report, the explosion scattered debris as far as 100 feet from the site. Mail in the box was also destroyed.
