Crime Report: Police Respond to Animal Complaint, Child Left in Car

The following arrest information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 37-year-old Southfield mother was arrested Monday afternoon after police found her 1-year-old son alone in her car in a lot at 14 Mile and Orchard Lake Roads.

According to the report, a passer-by called 911 after watching the child screaming and alone in the car for 15 minutes. Officers arrived to find him buckled in his car seat; the driver's side window and a passenger side window were open a few inches, the report said.

Five minutes after police arrived, the mother showed up with another child, an infant, the report said. She told police she had left the older child in the car because he was sleeping and that she had only been gone 10 minutes, according to the report. She was arrested, and her husband arrived to take care of the children.

Animal complaint

A dog left without food or water in a backyard on a day when temperatures soared to 95 degrees was taken from a home on Waldron, according to a police report.

The report said an anonymous tip July 20 led officers to the home, where they found the dog leashed to a tree. A neighbor said that since December, the dog often had been left outside in extreme cold and heat, without food or water, the report said. The dog was removed from the home, and a note was left with the homeowner explaining what happened, the report said.

Heroin overdose suspected

Police were called to a home on Nine Mile Road around 6:40 p.m. Friday to assist the save a woman who was believed to have overdosed on heroin. According to the report, police found the 30-year-old Garden City woman in the bathtub, breathing heavily and unresponsive. Her boyfriend, a 46-year-old Farmington Hills man, said he arrived home from work and found the woman in a living room chair. The report did not indicate how the woman got from the chair to the bathtub. 

The boyfriend told police he saw a spoon and needle on a desk. Officers searching the woman for her identification found packets of heroin in her pants pocket. She was revived with Narcan, a drug used to counter the effects of an opiate overdose, and was taken to .

Drunken driving arrests

An officer patrolling at 12 Mile and Orchard Lake Roads arrested a 23-year-old Sterling Heights woman around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after he watched her vehicle nearly strike another car and then swerve toward the curb. According to the report, the woman appeared intoxicated; a portable breath test showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.14, nearly twice the 0.08 legal limit. A check of her record also showed an outstanding warrant out of Berkley for failure to appear in court.

Officers responding to a call about road rage in the parking lot around 9:30 p.m. Saturday arrested a 46-year-old Farmington Hills man on suspicion of drunken driving. According to the report, a woman told police the man had threatened to shoot her and a 34-year-old Farmington Hills man after a confrontation in the parking lot. The 46-year-old man, who refused a breath test, was arrested and jailed.

Open house parties

Police called to a home on Bridlepath Lane shortly after midnight Monday found a large tent in the backyard of the home, loud music and a large number of cars parked in the area. According to the report, someone yelled "Cops!" when police arrived, and a group of more than 50 people scattered, the report said. Officers stopped a 16-year-old West Bloomfield Township girl, who told them the cup she was holding contained wine. She was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.10. The homeowner, a 35-year-old man, was cited for having an open house party; the teen was taken home to West Bloomfield.

An 18-year-old resident of Rudgate Boulevard was ticketed for having an open house party after police responded to a noise complaint around 1 a.m. Monday. According to the report, police arrived at the apartment building to find a large group of teens in the hallway, and as officers approached, many of them ran. Police found evidence that alcohol was being consumed at the party.

Suicide threat

A 22-year-old man who threatened to kill himself and his friends was taken to for evaluation around 1 a.m. Sunday. The man's roommate called police to the apartment on Jefferson Court after the man, who was intoxicated, became destructive and threatened suicide. Friends arrived to help and stopped him from jumping out a second-floor window; the man threatened to kill them as well.

Larceny reported

A 57-year-old Farmington Hills man called police to report that his son had taken a desktop computer and left their home on Middlebelt. According to the report, the 23-year-old son had previous contacts with police and was known to be a heroin user. Officers searched the area and found the son riding a bicycle on Grand River near Beech Daly in Redford, the report said. Police waited for him to re-enter Farmington Hills and stopped him. The son had purchased heroin and crack cocaine, according to the report; he was arrested and jailed.

Crack cocaine possession arrest

A 46-year-old Linden man was arrested on charges of possession of crack cocaine and narcotics paraphernalia after police stopped his car at M-5 and Drake Road at 8:10 p.m. Monday for having an obstructed license plate. The contraband turned up in a search of the vehicle after the traffic stop, according to the police report. The man was also charged with driving with a suspended license; he was jailed, and the 45-year-old Walled Lake woman riding with him was taken to a business at 10 Mile and Haggerty roads to wait for a ride.

Embezzlement charged

A 47-year-old West Bloomfield resident was arrested Monday night on a charge of embezzlement after she was seen stashing items she had paid for in a bag with unpaid items at , where she worked. According to the report, a loss prevention officer told police he watched the woman hide the unpaid items and confronted her when she left the store. The value of the items was $47.67. The woman was arrested on an embezzlement charge and for a warrant out of Bloomfield Township. She posted bond and was released.
