Crime Report: Stolen Sports Cards Come Back to Local Store

The following information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. Arrests and charges do not indicate a conviction.

The owner of a sports collectibles business on Orchard Lake Rd. in Farmington Hills called police Monday around 4 p.m., after a customer attempted to sell stolen sports cards. 

According to the report, the owner told police he knew the cards were stolen, because their serial numbers matched the numbers from cards stolen in 2007 from his business in Sterling Heights. The customer, a 29-year-old man from Chicago, told police his father gave him the cards, and the father, a West Bloomfield resident, told police he purchased the cards from a pawn shop in Gratiot three years ago. Neither the son nor the father knew the cards were stolen, the report indicated. 

Thefts from vehicles

A resident on Oxford St. told police he parked his car at his residence at 7 p.m. on Sunday and returned at 8:30 a.m. Monday to find his cell phone and a jar with $25 in coins missing. The report indicated the vehicle was unlocked.

Two Farmington Hills men, ages 21 and 19, face charges after police responded to a complaint that two men were looking in cars on Woodside around 4:50 a.m. on Dec. 14. According to the report, the older man had a GPS device in his left front pocket, and police were able to track down the owner, who said it had been taken from her vehicle. 

Christmas lights vandalized

A resident on Jefferson St. told police that someone cut a strand of lights on his home's display sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday. The report indicated that this was the second incident of vandalism to the same light display.

Drunk driving charged

A 40-year-old Farmington Hills woman involved in a car accident at Orchard Lake and 14 Mile Roads around 3:50 p.m. on Thursday faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. No one was injured in the accident, according to the police report. The driver told police she was on her way to pick up her children from school and had no memory of the accident. Police found an empty beer can and a full bottle of beer in her car; a portable breath test showed her blood alcohol level was .22, which is more than twice the .08 legal limit, the report indicated. The woman was taken into custody, posted bond and was released to her sister. 

A 30-year-old Novi man faces a drunk driving charge after police found his vehicle stopped and facing north in the south-bound lanes at Halsted and Grand River. According to the report, the driver was passed out, with his foot on the brake, and the car had been left in gear. An officer woke the driver and asked him several times to put the vehicle in park before the driver complied. A portable breath tests showed the driver's blood alcohol level was .08, which is the legal limit. 

Breaking and entering

A Farmington Hills man left his home on Doreen Ave. Dec. 14 at 5:30 a.m. and returned around 10:30 p.m. to find the side door had been forced open. According to the report, a laptop computer and three bottles of the prescription drug Ritalin were missing. 

Narcotics arrest

A 45-year-old homeless man faces multiple charges after police stopped his vehicle at I-696 and Halsted Ave. on Sunday evening, because of a faulty brake light and loud exhaust. According to the report, the officer noticed the odor of marijuana when he spoke with the driver, whose record showed three current license suspensions, two previous convictions for driving with a suspended license and five outstanding warrants. The report indicated a search of the driver and vehicle uncovered an Oxycontin pill, cocaine and 22, 1/4 oz. bags of marijuana and $325 in cash. In addition to the narcotics charges, the man was ticketed for the faulty brake light and loud exhaust.
