Crime Report: Thefts from Vehicles Reported at Apartment Complexes

The following information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Between Sept. 2 and Saturday, several residents in two apartment complexes reported the theft of GPS devices from their vehicles. According to the reports, cars parked in lots at Green Hill and Diamond Forest apartments had their driver's side windows smashed and items taken.

Drunken driving arrest

A 62-year-old Detroit man was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to the report, an officer on patrol on Grand River near Jefferson stopped a vehicle with its bright lights on that was drifting in and out of its lane. The driver told the officer he had been driving his grandchildren home. A portable breath test measured the man's blood-alcohol level at .117, more than the .08 legal limit. However, the officer noted in the report the man had emphysema, so a blood sample was also taken at .

Marijuana arrests

A 23-year-old Birmingham man was arrested during the early morning of Sept. 2 after his vehicle was stopped for speeding at 14 Mile and Inkster roads. According to the report, a search of the vehicle turned up a baggie of marijuana in the driver's side door.

A 23-year-old Farmington Hills man was arrested late Sunday afternoon on a charge of marijuana possession. According to the report, the man's vehicle was stopped at M-5 near Orchard Lake Road because the brake and taillights on one side were covered with black plastic. The driver told the officer he had a concealed-pistol license and was carrying a weapon, which was confiscated. A search of the trunk uncovered a baggie of marijuana. In addition to the drug charges and ticket for the equipment violation, the officer noted in the report that additional charges may be filed because it was unknown whether the gun was registered.

House party complaint

A resident called police around 11:30 p.m. Sunday to report a loud, large house party on Bycroft. According to the report, when police arrived they saw a number of young people in the driveway and lawn. Many ran inside the house, but two people left on the driveway told police there were many intoxicated young people inside. Officers spoke with a 17-year-old who lived in the home; he told police he invited friends over and the party got out of hand. Police contacted his mother, who was out of state, and she asked that everyone be cleared out of the house. Police issued 11 tickets to teens for underage drinking; the 17-year-old, who had a .019 blood-alcohol level, was ticketed for having the open house party.

Gym thefts

A 65-year-old Farmington Hills man told police someone went through his wallet while he was at on Monday morning and took credit cards and $150. According to the report, the thief racked up nearly $2,000 in charges at stores in Walled Lake and Novi.

A Troy man had his cell phone, cash and car keys taken from his locker while he was at the on Sept. 2 between 8 a.m. and noon According to the report, the man had to leave for a doctor's appointment, and as he got into his vehicle, he noticed a cell phone lying on the front seat. He turned it over to YMCA staff; police used the phone to locate a suspect, who they found talking on the victim's cell phone at a local drugstore. Police also reported finding four credit cards and a license belonging to someone who had his belongings stolen in an earlier incident at the YMCA.
