Crime Report: Thieves Target Unlocked Vehicles

The following information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. Arrests and charges do not indicate a conviction.

A number of residents contacted over the past week to report thefts from their vehicles. The incidents were reported in the following areas: 

  • 29000 block of Eldon
  • 23000 block of Middlebelt
  • 37000 block of Fleetwood
  • 23000 block of Barfield Dr.
  • 30000 block of W. 12 Mile
  • 21000 block of Parker St. 
  • 21000 block of Robinson
  • 25000 block of Beecham Rd. 

In most cases, the vehicles were left unlocked. Also, a resident in the 21000 block of Green Hill Rd. reported someone removed the catalytic converter from his 2011 Kia Sedona after midnight on July 5. 

Narcotics arrests

An 18-year-old Southfield man faces a charge of marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession, after his vehicle was stopped July 3 at 10 Mile and Inkster, for having tinted windows. According to the report, the officer noticed an odor of marijuana as he spoke with the driver, who told the officer there were four bags of the drug in his vehicle. A search turned up five bags, totalling 11.3 grams, and a marijuana pipe, the report indicated.

A 21-year-old Gladwin woman faces a charge of heroin possession, after a traffic stop at Middlebelt and Eldred at around 5:40 p.m. on July 4. According to the report, an officer patrolling on Grand River near Middlebelt stopped the woman's vehicle after a check on the license plate showed the registered owner had a suspended license and outstanding warrant. A search of the vehicle turned up three syringes fill with suspected heroin, a empty syringe and baggies with suspected heroin residue. 

A 20-year-old Plymouth woman faces charges of heroin possession, after an officer stopped her vehicle near M5 and Drake early Monday morning. According to the report, the officer was on patrol and saw the woman's vehicle drifting in the lane as she drove. The report indicated that a search of the vehicle turned up a needle and white paper fold with suspected heroin, a marijuana pipe and two spoons with suspected heroin residue. In addition to the drug charges, the driver was ticketed for reckless driving, no proof of insurance and no valid license.

As an officer approached a 45-year-old Detroit woman sitting in a car on Harrison Court Sunday evening, the woman got out of the car and walked toward the apartment building, saying she needed to change her clothes. She continued into the building even after being asked to stop. The report indicated that the officer noted a smell of burned marijuana in the vehicle and saw a bag of marijuana inside the vehicle. When the woman returned, the report indicated, she told the officer she was smoking in the vehicle, because there were children inside the home. A search of the vehicle turned up marijuana cigarettes, two large pieces of marijuana and a package of rolling papers. 

Drunken driving arrests

A 35-year-old Redford Township woman faces a charge of drunken driving, after an officer saw her vehicle swerving on the road near on Halsted near the M-5 ramp at around 11:20 a.m. on July 4. According to the report, the officer who stopped the driver noticed a strong odor of intoxicants while speaking to her. A preliminary breath test showed the woman's blood alcohol level was .13, which is more than the .08 legal limit. The woman was ticketed and released, after posting $200 bond. 

Child injured

A Farmington resident told police July 4 that while she and her 5-year-old granddaughter were at the splash pad in Heritage Park, an older child ran into the 5-year-old so hard that two of the girl's teeth were knocked out. The woman told police that her granddaughter required medical attention. The report noted that running is not allowed at the splash pad, and that the grandmother did not plan to file charges. 

Break-ins

The listing agent for a home in the 38000 block of Cheshire Dr. told police that someone took the furnace and the air conditioner out of the home sometime between June 29 and July 9. According to the report, the home had been vacant for some time and was recently sold. 

Owners of a home in the 28000 block of 11 Mile called police Monday afternoon, after they arrived home to find the front door open. According to the report, the door appeared to have been kicked in. Thieves took $230 in cash and more than $3,000 worth of jewelry.
