Crime Report: Unlicensed Solicitors Had Outstanding Warrants

who responded Monday to a call about four men soliciting door-to-door without a license on Middlebelt Road took two of the men into custody on outstanding warrants. 

According to the report, the men — all in their 20s and from Detroit, Mount Pleasant and Cleveland — were dressed in clothing with logos from a company called Just Energy. The men said they were attempting to get customers to change their energy supplier, and they said the company did not provide them with a soliciting permit, the report said. A check of their backgrounds showed that two of the men, both from Detroit, had outstanding warrants. The report indicated that one man was picked up Wayne County authorities; the other was taken to a location where West Bloomfield Police picked him up. All four men were issued tickets for soliciting without a permit. 

Breaking and entering

  • An Albion Ave. resident who left his home to visit a friend Monday afternoon returned to find electronics and jewelry, including a state high school football championship ring, had been taken from his home. According to a police report, the man told officers that he leaves the rear wall door open for friends. The report indicated that a friend who came to visit discovered the theft and called the resident to let him know about it. 
  • A resident on Stockton Drive told police that someone broke into her home while she was out between 4:50 p.m. Saturday and 12:40 a.m. Sunday. According to the police report, more than $4,000 worth of electronics, jewelry and a Coach purse were taken. Entry to the home was gained through a window, the report said. 

Heroin possession charged

A 19-year-old White Lake resident faces charges of heroin possession after a traffic stop on Interstate 696 near Orchard Lake Road late Sunday afternoon. According to the report, an officer patrolling in the area saw a vehicle make a sudden lane change that cut off another vehicle. The vehicle's license plate was obscured by a large ball hitch, and large cracks in the windshield created a vision obstruction. The driver told the officer that his friends had paid him to drive them into Detroit to buy heroin, the report said. A search of the vehicle uncovered a substance that tested positive for heroin stashed in the driver's cellphone, the report indicated. The passengers were released. In addition to the narcotics charges, the driver was ticketed for improper lane usage, no proof of insurance and no registration.

Retail fraud

A loss prevention officer from called police after taking a 16-year-old from Redford Township into custody around 2:50 p.m. Sunday. According to the police report, the loss prevention officer saw the teen and another person put on clothing inside the store, then walk past the cash registers without attempting to pay. The other person, a 19-year-old Redford Township man, ran toward a vehicle in the parking lot. Officers found him in the vehicle with a pair of Nike sweatpants. The 19-year-old was ticketed and released; the 16-year-old was taken to the Farmington Hills Police Department and eventually released to his father. 

Weapons incident

Three 16-year-olds, two from Southfield and one from West Bloomfield, were taken into custody around 4 p.m. Saturday after a motorist called police to report that someone had pointed a .38-caliber handgun at her while she was driving on Northwestern Highway near Orchard Lake Road. An officer located the vehicle and followed it into a grocery store parking lot at 14 Mile and Farmington Rd.; the driver got out and walked toward the store, refusing to stop when ordered to do so, the report indicated. The officer reported that he drew his weapon, and the driver finally obeyed commands. The two passengers remained in the vehicle until other officers arrived. The report did not indicate whether any charges were filed, but the teens' parents were contacted.
