Crime Report: Vandals Strike Farmington Hills Business

The following information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Sometime between Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m., vandals struck on Eight Mile Road in Farmington Hills, causing extensive damage to vending machines and four of five buildings on the site.

According to the report, a glass window was broken on a door to gain entrance to a building, and then a forklift was used to force open an overhead door. The forklift was also used to force open doors in the other three buildings. Vandals moved four vending machines into the construction yard and destroyed them, damaged a water line in a lunchroom and smashed restroom fixtures, and severely damaged a dump truck left parked in the lot by a friend of the business owner.

Juvenile complaint

An asset protection manager for Sam's Club and a real estate agent who were showing the former Sam's Club building on Haggerty Road on Saturday discovered a group of three or four youths on bikes near a previously broken door at the north end of the building. According to the report, the agent noticed the door was standing open, and one of the youths was inside the building. As he approached, the youths pedaled away. No damage was reported.

Theft of grill

A 55-year-old homeowner on Briarwyke Drive returned home from running errands Saturday afternoon to find items stored alongside his garage were missing. According to the report, someone took a barbecue grill, two propane tanks and a smaller camping grill.

Heroin possession arrest

An officer who made a traffic stop in the M-5/Drake Road area Friday around 9:30 p.m. arrested a 22-year-old New Hudson man for heroin possession and a 21-year-old Novi woman for possession of narcotics paraphernalia. According to the report, the officer stopped the man's vehicle because of an obstructed license plate and erratic driving. Police said the man, who was driving, agreed to a search of the vehicle, which turned up two packets of heroin. After the man was arrested, the woman turned over a syringe, which had traces of heroin in the cap, police said. In addition to the narcotics charges, the driver was ticketed for the obstructed plate and improper lane usage.

Vehicle fire

Farmington Hills police and fire responded when a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette caught fire at restaurant on Orchard Lake Road Friday around 6:20 p.m. According to the report, the owner, a 51-year-old Farmington Hills man, had the fire extinguished before firefighters arrived.

Home invasion

Police were called to on Thursday at 2 p.m., after a maintenance worker following suspects in a home invasion lost the two men near Grand River and Halsted. According to the report, a 29-year-old woman living in an apartment on Spring Lane told police she was eating lunch when she heard someone knocking and ringing her doorbell. Through the peephole, she saw a man she did not recognize. She left through a back door and spotted a second man, then called for the maintenance worker who was in the area. The worker told police he saw two men running from the apartment. They entered a black Jeep, and he gave chase in his vehicle, until a flat tire stopped him. Police were unable to find the suspects. A small container of coins and costume jewelry were reported stolen from the apartment.

Hubcaps taken

A 55-year-old Southfield woman told police the hubcaps were taken from her GMC Envoy on Friday, while it was parked in a lot near on Grand River. According to the report, the theft occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 2:10 p.m.

Vehicle theft

A van was stolen and two others were broken into over the weekend at on Nine Mile Road. According to the report, an undetermined number of tools were stolen. The business owner told police he would provide a detailed list of the missing items.

Dog bite

A 76-year-old man told police he was biking on LaMuera on Saturday around 10 a.m. when a Doberman ran out from a residence and bit into his left leg. According to the report, made at the Farmington Hills Police Department, the man said the dog's owner retrieved the animal after the incident and they exchanged information. He wanted to report the incident to police; Oakland County Animal Control was notified.

Narcotics arrest

Officers checking on a report of a vehicle in the roadway at Paddleford and Old Homestead at 12:45 a.m. Saturday said they found the driver sleeping and pills scattered in the vehicle's center console. According to the report, when officers woke the 29-year-old Dearborn man, he was confused about where he was and how he got there. A search of the vehicle uncovered marijuana and a variety of other pills. The man was arrested on charges of possessing synthetic narcotics and marijuana.

Bike theft

A 19-year-old Novi man told police his bicycle was stolen while he was shopping at CVS on Nine Mile Road on Saturday evening. The man said he saw two other bicycles parked at the store before he walked in; when he walked out, one of those had been left in place of his. He spotted a man riding his bike, a black Diamondback mountain bike valued at $230, on the west side of Haggerty, in Novi.

Indecent exposure charged

While walking in around 8:10 p.m. on Aug. 10, two women said they got a shocking surprise: A 27-year-old South Lyon man took off his clothing and ran toward them. According to the report, the man had walked fully clothed past the women before taking off his shorts and underwear, pulling his shirt behind his head and running back. After seeing the women approach another pair of walkers, who called police, the man dressed and apologized. He walked with the women to the front of the park, where they met officers, who arrested the man on a charge of indecent exposure.
