Farmington Hills Homeless Man Faces Public Drunkeness Charge

The following information was supplied by the Farmington Hills Police Department. Arrests and charges do not indicate a conviction.

A man Farmington Hills Police described as homeless faces a charge of public drunkenness, after he was found last week laying in a ditch on Jefferson Court. 

According to the report, police were called to the area shortly after 9 p.m. on Nov. 14 and had a hard time waking the 53-year-old man, who told them he was "pretty drunk" and taking a nap. Temperatures that night hovered around 30 degrees. The report indicated that a preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol was .27, more than three times the .08 legal limit. The man was released to Community EMS and taken to Botsford Hospital for injuries he may have suffered in a fall from a bicycle. 

Drunken driving charges

  • A 26-year-old West Bloomfield man faces a charge of drunken driving after police found him asleep and unresponsive in his vehicle, which was parked and running in the lot at Kroger on Middlebelt shortly before 8 a.m. on Nov. 14. According to the report, a preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol level was .13, more than the .08 legal limit. He was taken into custody and released after his mother posted bond. 
  • A 70-year-old Bingham Farms man faces his first drunken driving charge, after his vehicle left the road and landed in a ditch at Middlebelt and Geraldine Court just after 8 p.m. on Sunday. According to the report, the man told police that he had a fight with his wife, drank two bottles of wine and left home. Police found a bottle of wine lying on the floorboard and a glass containing remnants of red wine sitting in the vehicle's center console. A preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol was .20, more than twice the .08 legal limit. 
  • A 63-year-old Farmington Hills man faces a drunken driving charge, following a Monday evening accident at 14 Mile and Orchard Lake Roads. According to the report, West Bloomfield Township police also responded to the 3-car accident and determined the man was the at-fault driver. A preliminary breath test showed the man's blood alcohol level was .291, more than three times the .08 legal limit. 

Thefts

  • A resident on Independence Drive called police early Monday morning to report his red 1998 Dodge Caravan was stolen sometime between 8 p.m.  Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday. The report indicated that officers found no sign of force entry, but noticed the frost had been wiped away from the passenger window of a car parked next to the van, as though someone looked inside that vehicle. The report also noted a number of thefts from vehicles were reported in the same area during the same time period. 
  • A resident on Strathmore reported a tin container filled with cigarettes was taken from his vehicle sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 a.m. Monday. According to the report, the vehicle was left unlocked. A space heater was taken from a vehicle left parked and unlocked on Kennedy Drive the same night. 
  • A resident on Geneva called police shortly before 9 p.m. Monday to report that a video game console and controllers, a hand-held video game, gym bag and GPS device were taken from his vehicle sometime between 8 p.m. Sunday and 3 a.m. Monday. According to the report, the man told police he believed he locked the vehicle, and a spare key was also missing. 

Narcotics possession charged

A 37-year-old Hamtramck man stopped at Middlebelt and Shiawassee because of warrants and a suspended license also faces narcotics charges.

According to the report, while speaking with the driver, the officer noticed the odor of marijuana, and the driver admitted to having a small amount in the center console. He told police that he had a medical marijuana card, but could not produce it. The driver also told police that he had three grams of hashish in a bag inside the vehicle, the report indicated.

Officers found the hashish and more than 336 grams of marijuana, partially smoked marijuana cigarettes, medical marijuana labels, a scale and a grinder in the vehicle. The report also noted the driver had two previous narcotics convictions.
