Farmington Hills Police Calls: High at Hoops Games

Police present at North Farmington and Harrison contests make drug-related arrests.

On Feb. 10, Farmington Hills officers stationed at two high school basketball games made drug-related arrests.

A detective assigned to monitor a basketball game reportedly noticed an odor of marijuana coming from four men who entered the gym around 6:30 p.m. He spoke to a 21-year-old Detroit man, who turned over a baggie of marijuana, and a 20-year-old Detroit man, who gave permission to search his car, according to the report. The search turned up a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol and prescription drugs. A K-9 search of the vehicle also turned up more marijuana, officers reported. The two men had several outstanding warrants, and the 20-year-old was on parole. Officers reportedly learned the pistol was listed as stolen out of New Baltimore on July 26. The men were taken into custody.

Around 8 p.m. the same night at , an officer working security spotted a disheveled-looking teen who also had a strong odor of marijuana around him. The 17-year-old Farmington Hills resident reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana at a park before coming to the game. He told officers he had no marijuana on him but had some in his car, and he gave permission for a search. According to the report, officers found a total of seven baggies of marijuana, more than 50 empty baggies, rolling papers and a rolling machine in his car. The youth was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Theft from CVS

Officers called to at 8:30 p.m. Sunday were told a manager spotted a woman taking theft sensors off perfume bottles. According to the report, the store manager said the woman had previously been banned from the store for shoplifting, but when he tried to stop her and recover the items, she simply left the store. The woman was identified as a 36-year-old Farmington Hills resident.

Crack cocaine possession

An officer on patrol on Grand River near Middlebelt reported watching a truck veer onto the right shoulder of the road. The truck also had a defective brake light, and the officer made a traffic stop at M-5 and Drake. The driver, a 58-year-old Howell man, reportedly said he was blind in one eye, which is why he veered off the road. He told the officer he had been visiting his ailing father in Redford. According to the report, the driver and his passenger, a 60-year-old Howell man, appeared nervous. A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up a straw with white powder on it, and during the search, the driver refused to speak. Officers found he had packets of crack cocaine in his mouth; the man attempted to swallow them, but officers prevented him from doing so, according to the report. The man was arrested for crack cocaine possession, and his truck and the passenger were released at the scene.

Stolen check

A 49-year-old Farmington Hills man told police on Saturday that someone using a stolen check had taken more than $1,000 from his business account. He told police the check may have been stolen from an employee at a work site. After he closed the account, 12 additional attempts were made to take money from it, according to the report.

Drug possession

An officer traveling on Northwestern Highway near 13 Mile around 5 p.m. Saturday stopped a vehicle for a vision obstruction hanging from the rearview mirror. The vehicle turned in to a parking lot but drove past a number of empty parking spaces before stopping. According to the report, the driver was unable to produce his license or registration, and his speech was slow. The 22-year-old Farmington Hills man was reportedly asked to get out of the car and remove his shoes and socks. A plastic container with folded papers inside it fell out, and the driver reportedly admitted it was heroin. A syringe and a vitamin bottle that reportedly contained crack cocaine were found in the car. Both the driver and his 26-year-old passenger were arrested for drug possession.

Restaurant assault alleged

A confrontation between customers and employees at Steven Lelli's Inn on the Green at 11:30 p.m. Saturday resulted in assault tickets being issued to two Farmington Hills women. According to the report, a 24-year-old Hills woman was complaining that she and her party had received poor service, when another customer became upset at the loud conversation. The manager, a 45-year-old Sterling Heights man, told police he asked the woman and her party to leave. He reported that the woman pushed him into a wine cabinet on the way out, but he said he did not want to press charges. According to the report, another manager, a 39-year-old Sterling Heights woman, saw the party leaving and opened the door for them. She told police she was pushed from behind and then pushed in the chest by a 54-year-old Farmington Hills woman, and she said she wanted to press charges.

Shoplifting at ULTA

A store manager at on Orchard Lake Road told officers that around 8 p.m. on Feb. 10 a woman took three fragrances valued at $265 from the store. According to the report, the woman was spotted on camera taking sensors off the bottles and putting them into her purse and pocket. While checking the tapes, the manager reportedly discovered another incident on Feb. 5, in which an elderly woman took cosmetics valued at $350.
