Farmington Hills Police Investigate False Cell Phone Theft Report

Police will ask the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office to issue a warrant after investigating the Sunday report.

Farmington Hills Police will pursue charges against a Southfield woman who they say filed a false report Sunday about a cell phone theft.

According to the original report, the woman told police she was talking on her phone as she walked from her sister's home in Southfield to Walgreen's at Grand River and Eight Mile. When she reached the store parking lot, she said, a man who asked to use her phone hit her, took the phone and drove away.

Commander Matt Koehn said the department is submitting a false felony report warrant request to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in connection with the incident.

"Unfortunately, we encounter people from time to time who report false police reports for a variety of reasons," he wrote in an email. "We always take it very seriously, because this type of incident makes the public feel less safe and secure for no reason."
