Farmington Hills Police Urge Caution After Weekend Road Rage Assault

are warning motorists to avoid confrontation on the road, after a "road rage" incident at 13 Mile and Orchard Lake Saturday left a Farmington Hills woman badly injured. 

According to a press release issued this afternoon, Steven Schut, 52, of Youngstown, OH was arrested after at a BP gas station in the southeast corner of the intersection. He faces charges of aggravated assault and marijuana possession.

The assault happened after Schut, who was driving a Pontiac Firebird, cut off the Farmington Hills woman as the two were driving on Orchard Lake, according to a police report. 

Police warn that incidents of road rage can escalate with "a simple roll of the eyes or a hand gesture to another driver". They advise drivers to not retaliate, stay in their vehicles, drive to a public location and call 911. 

"Self control will often times deescalate an incident," the release indicated. "You are in control of your vehicle, so consider just avoiding the situation and driving away." 

Farmington-Farmington Hills Patch reported this morning that the 34-year-old Farmington Hills woman, who was treated at , told police that Schut cut her off on Orchard Lake, then followed her into the gas station. 

According to a police report, the woman told police that the man punched her in the face, threw her into her vehicle and slammed her head onto the hood. He continued to assault her until someone pulled him off, and then he ran to his car and drove away, the report indicated. West Bloomfield Township police stopped and detained him.
