Farmington Man Faces Felony Charges After Stand-Off on Hawthorne

Frederick Leon Perkins is accused of sexually assaulting a woman and holding her against her will.

A 47-year-old Farmington man has been charged in connection with an assault and police stand-off that closed Nine Mile Road between Cora and Grand River for several hours Thursday morning.

According to a Farmington Public Safety Department press release, Frederick Leon Perkins faces three counts of 1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and one count of Unlawful Imprisonment. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Public safety officers were called to the home on Hawthorne at around 6:50 a.m. Thursday, after receiving a call that a woman had been physically and sexually assaulted. Officers learned she had also been held against her will before she escaped.

The woman, who told officers that Perkins had threatened her with a gun, was taken for treatment of her injuries, described in the release not life-threatening.

When Perkins refused to leave the house, officers blocked off streets and called in the Oakland County Sheriff's Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. Eventually, Perkins surrendered.

A search of the home later turned up a BB gun that resembled a semi-automatic handgun. Public Safety Director Robert Schulz said the department took extra precautions "to ensure the safety of everyone involved."

“The victim in this case had been an acquaintance of Mr. Perkins and she reported no prior history of abuse with him," Public Safety Director Robert Schulz said. "We are grateful that the victim was able to escape without life threatening injuries."
