Farmington Police Calls: Fraud, Liquor Theft, Suspicious Vehicle

Two residents report getting phone calls seeking their personal information.

Two local residents in the past week reported phone solicitations for personal information, one case may have led to fraud.

On Feb. 1, a Farmington Hills woman told police she went to in Farmington to withdraw funds and found her account was short. She learned a check for $387 was drawn from her account without her knowledge. According to the report, the woman said an unknown man claiming to be a TCF representative contacted her on Jan. 18 asking to verify her bank information, which she gave him. She told police she believes this is how someone accessed her account.

An 85-year-old Farmington woman told police she received a call on Jan. 29 from a woman who asked about her use of Medicare. The local resident reportedly believed the call was legitimate and gave out her Social Security number, according to the report. She told police that after speaking with her son, she realized she had made a mistake. According to the report, her son set up fraud alerts, and an officer gave the woman a packet of information about identity theft.

School bus stop violation

A 28-year-old Warren man was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant after he failed to stop for a school bus that had its flashers on and stop arm extended, while picking up students at Grand River and Warner at 8:53 a.m. on Feb. 1. According to the report, an officer on patrol saw the violation and made the traffic stop. The driver and passenger, a 31-year-old Detroit woman, said they didn't notice the bus. The driver reportedly could not provide his license and registration; a background check showed the warrant out of Madison Heights and a license suspension. The driver was taken into custody and ticketed for driving with a suspended license and failure to stop for a school bus. He reportedly posted bond and was released.

Drunk driving arrest

Around 2:50 a.m. on Feb. 1, an officer patroling in the area of M-5 and Farmington Road observed a vehicle traveling south in the north-bound lane, in snowy conditions. According to the report, the car turned into the Crossroads Plaza shopping center parking lot at Nine Mile and Farmington Roads, jumping the curb, turned onto Nine Mile and continued onto M-5. After stopping the vehicle, the officer reportedly observed the driver had slurred speech and noticed a strong odor of intoxicants. The 34-year-old Detroit woman, who told the officer she was a student at , was arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence.

Theft of alcohol

A man recognized by police from previous cases reportedly took alcohol from on Farmington Road on Jan. 31 around 11:45 a.m. According to the report, an officer was dispatched to the store and arrived after the suspect left. According to the report, the store's surveillance camera showed the man walk in, go directly to the liquor aisle and place three bottles of cognac in his pants. He was described as a white male with a close-cropped hair cut and small bald spot, heavy-set, wearing blue jeans, black gloves and a dark, hooded sweatshirt under a varsity-type jacket that is dark with light-colored sleeves.

Suspicious vehicle

A resident called police to Brookdale Condos on Grand River near Lake Way on Jan. 29 at 10:30 p.m., with a report of a suspicious vehicle circling the parking lot for the past half hour. An officer talked with the driver, a 39-year-old Waterford man, who reportedly said he answered a Craig's List ad and made an appointment to meet other men for sex at that address, according to the report. He told the officer he thought it would be a house, and was circling the lot hoping to meet with the person he had contacted online. A background check showed prior contacts for breaking and entering, but the man was released because there had been no criminal activity in the area and a search revealed nothing suspicious, according to the report.
