Farmington Public Safety Honors Officer of the Year

Sergeant Reginald Madeline, the department's fire marshall, receives the top honor at a May awards ceremony.

Farmington Public Safety Fire Marshall Sergeant Reginald Madeline has been named the department's 2012 Officer of the Year.

The award announcement noted Madeline is responsible for training all public safety and reserve officers, and is responsible for maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus. He is a member of the Oakland County Hazardous Materials Response Team serves as a team leader. 

Since 2009, Madeline has conducted more than 200 fire inspections at all of the city's apartment complexes and high-risk commercial buildings, to ensure the occupants' safety and reduce the risk of fire damage. He is also a certified child safety seat inspector.

He also received a life-saving award for his work in reviving a man in cardiac arrest. The man was discharged from the hospital just three days later. 

"Sgt. Madeline continually portrays a professional image and represents the department to the highest level at all times," Director Robert Schulz wrote. 

Other honors presented during the department's Awards Night in May include: 

  • Commander Justin DuLong and Public Safety Officer (PSO) Scott Herrmann - Unit Citation Award for a February case involving recovery of a stolen iPhone
  • Detective Scott Brown - Citation for the arrest of suspects in an April identity theft investigation
  • PSO Patrick Spelman - Letter of Appreciation for chasing and arresting a suspect in May who had 11 warrants for his arrest
  • Detective Scott Brown - Citation for his work on a May identity theft investigation
  • PSO Herrmann and PSO Andrew Morche - Unit Citation for identifying a suspect in a June larceny at a Farmington business
  • Sergeant Jeffrey Brow and PSO Shane Wash - Unit Citation for their work in identifying suspects connected to the June theft of a car stereo
  • Commander Frank Demers - Letter of Appreciation, PSO Christine Schutz - Citation for their work in connection with the July theft of jewelry from a home
  • Commander Demers, Detective Brown, Detective Wash - Unit Citation for their work on a case involving items taken from 22 vehicles in the Chatham Hills subdivision
  • Sergeant Todd Anderson - Citation for his work on the arrest of a man carrying a concealed weapon while causing a disturbance at Drakeshire Apartments
  • Commander DuLong, PSO Spelman - Letter of Appreciation for their recovery of two bicycles stolen from the driveway of a home on Whittakre
  • Detective Brown - Department Citation for his work in the arrest of a woman suspected of passing a bad check at Talmer Bank
  • Sergeant Anderson, PSO William Wood - Letter of Appreciation and Paramedics Betty Fowler and Leah Maynard - Civilian Letter of Appreciation, for resuscitating a person in September using CPR, an automatic external defibrillator and advanced life support measures. Sadly, the person died the following day. 
  • PSO Herrmann - Letter of Appreciation and PSO Spelman - Merit Citation for their pursuit and apprehension of a man with an extensive criminal history, who was stopped for speeding in October. 
  • Sergeant Brow - Letter of Appreciation for his work in recovering a stolen U-Haul truck that had been parked in downtown Farmington in November. 
  • Sanford Altschul - Civilian Citation for his years of volunteer service and professional guidance to the department.
  • Sergeant Richard Friess - MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Award for arresting more than 40 drivers who were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, three under-age drivers who had a blood alcohol level of .02 percent or more, and 27 additional alcohol-related violations.
