UPDATED: Farmington Public Safety Investigates Thefts from Cars in Chatham Hills

Police say all of the vehicles hit during the spree were either unlocked or had partially open windows.

UPDATE: The Farmington Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) reports 21 vehicles were attacked overnight in the Chatham Hills subdivision, located south of Grand River and west of Drake.

Items of value taken included purses, GPS systems, a laptop computer, golf clubs, a tent and loose change.

In alerts sent through Nixle.com, police said it appears that all of the vehicles were either unlocked or had windows partially open. In one case, someone got into vehicles that were parked in an unlocked garage.

In the latest alert, police noted that "a witness reported seeing an African-American male, approximately 20 years old with a slender build walking in the area at approximately midnight. The witness thought this was suspicious, but did not report this to the public safety department."

Another witness heard his dogs barking somewhere around 12:30 a.m.-1 a.m. and told police this was "out of the ordinary". Police strongly encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or occurrences.

Farmington DPS advises all residents who discover a break-in to leave the vehicle undisturbed and call 911. The alert also reminds residents to remove all valuables from their cars and lock car doors when vehicles are parked overnight.
