Farmington Woman Seriously Injured in Apartment Fire

Public safety officials say the fire at Jamestown Apartments was contained to one unit.

Farmington Public Safety (FPS) investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that seriously injured a Farmington woman at early this afternoon.

FPS Director Robert Schulz said this is the first fire involving a serious injury in the community in more than 20 years.

According to authorities, the department responded around 12:30 p.m. to a unit on Jamestown Court, just off Grand River, on a report of light smoke coming from a second floor unit. After finding light smoke in the common hallway, officers forced entry into the apartment and were met with thick smoke and heat that forced them to the floor, with zero visibility inside the apartment.

Officers found fire in a back bedroom, where a 66-year-old woman was lying on the floor. She was removed from the apartment and basic life support efforts were administered, until Community Emergency Medical Service (CEMS) arrived and provided advanced life support. The woman suffered smoke inhalation and second degree burns; she was transported to a local hospital in serious condition

Public safety officers were able to contain the fire to the victim’s apartment. The apartment suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. Residents from the remaining apartments in the building have been allowed to return to their homes.
