Fire Damages Farmington Hills Group Home

Two employees battle blazing bed as residents are evacuated.

A 37-year-old Farmington Hills woman may face arson charges, following a fire at a group home on Briarwood Court on Sunday. 

According to a report filed by , the fire started on a bed shortly after 6 p.m. Employees told police that the woman abruptly left the home after coming out of her bedroom. An employee followed her outside, and the woman admitted she set her bed on fire.

Two employees knocked down flames with a fire extinguisher as residents evacuated the home, and  responded to the scene. By the time police arrived, residents were safely ensconced in a van parked in the driveway.

Officers located a lighter in the bushes outside the home; the woman told police she started the fire with it, the report indicated. She said she wanted to leave the home, because she was unhappy living there. 

Police estimate damages to the home at $50,000-$60,000. The report noted the company that leases the home found alternative lodging for the five residents who were displaced.
