First CPR Class Draws 21 Students at Harrison Friday

Five classes will be offered by Farmington Hills Fire and Farmington Public Safety departments.

While most of the student body enjoyed a long weekend, thanks to a scheduled half a day of school last Friday, 21 students volunteered to stay after classes and learn CPR.

In the first of five classes held in cooperation with Farmington Public Schools, the Farmington Hills Fire Dept. and the City of Farmington Dept. of Public Safety, students eagerly awaited classroom instruction, followed by “hands-on” training to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Farmington Hills City Council member Dr. Ken Massey is the driving force behind the pilot program, and is hoping it catches on with students, and ultimately becomes a requirement for graduation in the future.

There will be a total of five programs and, upon completion of the class, participants will be American Red Cross certified in CPR. One of the participants said that she signed up to take the class because her aunt has a heart condition, and she wanted to learn CPR just in case she experienced a heart attack. Knowing CPR would increase her odds for survival in the event of such an incident.
