Hazmat Incident Closes 13 Mile In Farmington Hills Thursday

Motorists navigated around a road closure at 13 Mile and Farmington Roads Thursday evening, as firefighters worked to prevent trouble from a propane leak.

Farmington Hills Fire Dept. Lieutenant Larry Gauthier said the 5:30 p.m. collision of a Schwann's home delivery truck, which was powered by propane, and a pizza delivery van caused the leak.

"The accident caused a fracture of the main shut-off valve for the propane," he said.

Propane is heavier than air, Gauthier explained, and once it comes into contact with air, it dissipates.

"Our concern was eliminating any opportunity for a spark," he said, which is why eastbound traffic on 13 Mile was shut down until 9:40 p.m.

Farmington Hills Police Sergeant Jeff King said the vehicles collided while one was making a left turn on a flashing red light. He said the accident report showed no determination of fault.
