North Farmington Field Evacuated Monday Over Suicide Threat

According to police, the man said he was not serious about the threat and now faces a charge of drunk driving.

cleared football players from their practice field Monday around 4 p.m., because a man who had apparently threatened suicide was parked at a nearby cemetery.

According to a Hills police report, officers were sent to North Farmington Cemetery, located on Farmington Rd., just south of Walnut Lane, to check on the man, who was on the phone with his wife. The person who reported the incident did not know whether the man had a gun, but told police he had access to weapons.

Students were evacuated because of the possibility there might be gunfire, the report indicated.

An officer spoke with the 39-year-old Detroit man, who got out of his truck without incident and was not armed. The man told police he had threatened suicide to make his wife angry, but was not serious. He told police he had just been to a strip club.

Police noticed a strong odor of alcohol, and a portable breath test showed the man's blood alcohol level was .17, according to the report. That exceeds the legal limit, which is .08.

Because of the suicide threat, the man was taken to for a mental evaluation. He faces a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
