Police Blotter: Alcohol-Related Calls, Warrant Arrests

Farmington Police officers aid two severely intoxicated men.

Warrant arrest

Officers called to the area behind in downtown Farmington at 7:19 p.m. May 20 found a 42-year-old Dearborn Heights man lying on a bench. According to the police report, the man was so inebriated that an officer had to rub his sternum to awaken him. Officers called Community EMS, but the man refused treatment, the report said. A check of his background showed an outstanding warrant out of Dearborn Heights; the man was taken to Farmington Road and Interstate 96, where Dearborn Heights police picked him up, the report said.

Drunken driving

A 30-year-old Auburn Hills man was arrested around 10:40 p.m. May 19 after being stopped by police at Grand River and Hawthorne for failing to signal a turn and having defective brake and license plate lights. While talking with the man, the officer noticed a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle, the police report said. The man failed field sobriety tests, according to the police report; a portable breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.12, more than the 0.08 legal limit, the report said. The man's vehicle was turned over to a woman riding in the car with him; he was arrested for driving under the influence.

Accident, suspicious behavior

An 18-year-old Farmington woman told police that after she rear-ended another vehicle at Marblehead and Power Roads at 4:30 p.m. May 19, the driver of the other vehicle made an offer to settle the damage without calling police. According to a police report, the woman said the other driver, a 47-year-old Taylor man, suggested that rather than call police, he meet her the following day to settle up at a time when she would be home alone. The woman, acting on an officer's advice, left a note with the officer's business card on her door, the report said. After she told police the note was picked up, an officer contacted the man, who told the officer he had nothing but the best intentions, according to the police report. The officer obtained information from the man to file the accident report and advised the woman to always contact the police when she is involved in an accident.

Designated driver arrested on DUI charge

An officer running radar speed detection around 2:30 a.m. May 19 at stopped a driver clocked at 45 miles per hour in the 25 mph zone. The 27-year-old West Bloomfield Township man told the officer he had been drinking with friends but had stopped drinking at 8 p.m. because he was the designated driver. A portable breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.11, higher than the 0.08 legal limit. Because his two passengers were also too intoxicated to drive, they were taken home. The man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence; his car was towed from the scene.

Drunken man hospitalized

A resident called police at 1:47 p.m. May 18 to report a man staggering in the road near Grand River and Haggerty. As officers approached the area, a woman flagged them down and said the man had gone behind in the Grand River-Halsted Shopping Center, according to the police report. Officers found a 34-year-old man staggering and walking in circles behind the shop, with a pint of alcohol in his pocket, the report said. Officers contacted his wife, but she was unwilling to provide her location and admitted she is in the country illegally, the police report said. A portable breath test showed the man's blood alcohol was 0.30, far above the legal limit of 0.08, the report said. Officers were concerned about his extreme intoxication and called Community EMS to transport him to , the report said.

Man charged with intent to distribute marijuana

A resident who was at the gas station on Grand River called police after observing what she thought might be a drug transaction. The woman told police she watched as a man who pulled up on a bicycle handed something to a man sitting on a crate in front of the station; she told police that he, in turn, handed something back, and the man on the bicycle left. According to the police report, police identified the man at the gas station as a 25-year-old from Detroit, who had previously been under investigation for selling marijuana to local teens. When police searched him, they found 14 baggies of marijuana hidden in his coat, the report said. A background check also showed several outstanding warrants. He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Unable to post bond, he was housed in the Oakland County Jail.
