Police Suspect Alcohol Involved in Orchard Lake Road Crash

The early morning collision between a SMART bus and a pick-up truck closed the main artery for several hours.

Farmington Hills Police suspect alcohol may have been a factor in an early Thursday morning crash that closed Orchard Lake Road from 11 Mile to I-696.

According to Lieutenant Mike Ciaramitaro, a SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) bus using the median turn-around to head north at Oakland Drive partly blocked a lane on Orchard Lake Road. A northbound pick-up truck that police believe was in the left lane struck the rear side of the bus.

In a report posted on detroit.cbslocal.comWWJ-AM traffic reporter Bill Szumanski reported that the affected portion of the bus was "completely caved in. The front-end of the pickup truck is pretty much missing."

Ciaramitaro said the driver was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital, where he is in stable condition. Two of the 13 passengers on the bus were also injured and taken to the hospital.

"We suspect one of the drivers had alcohol in their system," Ciaramitaro said, adding police are not identifying which driver was tested as the investigation continues.

The accident blocked traffic from 6:45 a.m. to around 11 a.m., Ciaramitaro said.
