5 Things You Should Know Today - April 9, 2012

The Farmington Planning Commission holds two public hearings tonight on proposed businesses, and the Farmington Hills City Council meets tonight.

After a holiday weekend, it's back to business in Farmington and Farmington Hills, as the Farmington Planning Commission looks at proposals for changes to two local establishments. Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

The "s" word is back in the forecast today. The National Weather Service predicts a 30 percent chance of rain today after 1 p.m., with snow showers possible after 2 a.m. tonight. Expect a high of 56, a low of 33, and winds gusting at 25-28 miles per hour today and tonight. 

2. Farmington Hills City Council

During a 6 p.m. study session at  today, officials will discuss minority hiring and a proposed water tower. At 7:30 p.m., they'll take up an agenda that includes five proclamations, the Beautification Commission's annual report, a look at the city's 5-year capital improvement plan, a resolution to sell and the donation of a .42 acre property on the north end of Locust Street, among other items. 3. Farmington Planning Commission

You can learn more about, and weigh in on, plans for two Farmington businesses at today's 7 p.m. meeting at . Commissioners will consider an application for an adult day care at on Grand River and an expansion at the . The commission will also re-open a discussion about allowing residents to keep chickens. 4. Look ahead:

The  Parent Teacher Student Association hosts judges Marla Parker and James Brady from the , who have been invited in to speak about legal issues with which parents of teenagers should be familiar. There will be time for questions at the 7 p.m. meeting. To learn more, call 248-785-2005

5. Look ahead: Farmington School Board meeting

Board members will meet in a study session on Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., at the in Farmington. Agenda items include recognition of the district's teachers and support staff person of the year, review of an agreement to establish an educational trust, a state-mandated public hearing on the district's anti-bullying policy, and the sale of a portion of the Fairview Early Childhood Education Center property on Oakcrest Drive.
