Congressional Candidate Takes on Role of Cantankerous Boss

Drexel Morton, who is running in the 11th District, performs in "She Loves Me" with an Ann Arbor theater company.

Hartland All Saints pastor, , who announced last month his decision to run for the new 11th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, continues to pursue other activities outside of politics as well.

Morton will be appearing in a summer production of the musical “She Loves Me,” with Ann Arbor's The Penny Seats, a relatively new group performing outdoors at the West Park band shell.

According to a press release, Morton will take on the role of the "cantankerous boss" Mr. Maraczek, who is a parfumerie owner and amateur ballroom dancer.

"I was certainly busy with my church, but I also thought it would be fun to try my hand at theatre again after a brief sabbatical from the hobby,” Morton said in the press release. “And on top of all that, I decide to throw my hat in the ring for Congress.”

The show tells a story of two workplace rivals who end up falling in love. The musical has three cinematical adaptions including: The Shop Around the Corner with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, In the Good Old Summertime” with Judy Garland and Van Johnson, and You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

"I just love this show so much. The music by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, who also wrote 'Fiddler on the Roof' and 'Fiorello!' among many others, is just sublime" Morton said in the release. "And I have worked with many of these talented folks in the cast before at Spotlight Players. It is such a fun and accepting and witty group - I feel so grateful to share this summer 'theatre therapy' with them."
