Farmington Council Clears the Way for Spring, Summer Events

If the warmer weather has you thinking about downtown Farmington spring and summer events, you're not alone.

On Monday, organizers for the Thursday night events and received approvals to hold their events again this year. 

From its beginnings nearly five years ago at the , Swinginfusion has now grown to encompass seven clubs around the metro area. Farmington club organizer Alexander Steward told officials that the group plans to host another community event on Aug. 16.

"(Last year's) event went beyond my expectations," Steward said, adding while he thought 150 people would attend, about 300 showed up. "We want to try to make it an annual event."

Steward said the group started out with mostly high school students, but now draws more college-age and post-college young adults. 

Swinginfusion will occupy the pavilion on Thursdays, 8 p.m.-11:20 p.m., from May 3 through Oct. 25.

director Mary Engelman told officials that the low-key music venue tucked into the Village Mall parking lot during Founders Festival will once again benefit the community's After School program. Alley Regalley offers upscale food and spirits, with music that offers an alternative to the rock bands that generally play at the beer tent, known as Walker's Tavern.

Officials approval of the Alley Regalley request supports the license request to the state Liquor Control Commission.

A group of events approved on the council's "consent agenda," passed with one motion, included:

• Poppy Days, May 17-19 at major intersections in the community
• South Farmington Baseball League Parade, May 5, 9:30 a.m., staging on the west side of city hall and then proceeding across Grand River, east on Oakland St., north on Farmington Rd., east on Shiawassee Rd. to . The league celebrates its opening day there. 
• , May 19 and 20 at Shiawassee Park
• annual picnic, June 3 at Shiawassee Park
