Barnett Wins 37th House District; Voters Return Dwyer to Oakland County Seat

Long lines were the rule in Farmington and Farmington Hills on Election Day.

12:06 a.m. Farmington Precinct 2 have been finalized, as are all results in local races. We'll have more election coverage Wednesday, including information about voter turnout. One last note: From all reports, despite long lines, voters remained cordial and patient while at polling places. Well done, Farmington and Farmington Hills.

10:53 p.m. Though counts from two Farmington precincts haven't been finalized, State Rep. Vicki Barnett has a sure win in the race for 37th District state house. This will be Barnett's third and final term; she expects to return to work on Thursday. Oakland County 14th District Commissioner Bill Dwyer is also headed back to work, with a lead of 1,300 votes, and Commissioner Marcia Gershenson wins in the 13th District with all precincts confirmed.

9:25 p.m. Bill Dwyer has pulled ahead of Todd Stearn by just over 1,200 votes in the Oakland County Commission 14th District race, with all precincts but one reporting.

9:15 p.m. The AV boards are still working and poll workers are still bringing materials in to Farmington Hills city hall, even as we're reporting results from Oakland County's website. The county has implemented a new wireless technology that transmits results as soon as the polls close. In Oakland County's 13th District, Democrat Marcia Gershenson of Bloomfield Township has a commanding 64%-35% lead over Republican Al Zaparackas of Farmington Hills, with all but one precinct reporting.

9:05 p.m. The Oakland County Board of Commissioners race in the 14th District is close. Challenger Todd Stearn, a Democrat from Beverly Hills, is just 500 votes behind incumbent Bill Dwyer of Farmington Hills, with just a handful of precincts unreported.

8:56 p.m. With what appears to be all but about four precincts in Farmington and Farmington Hills reporting, State Rep. Vicki Barnett (D-Farmington Hills) appears to be cruising toward re-election. Oakland County's elections website has her more than 7,000 votes ahead.

8:19 p.m. Farmington reports 1,959 voters cast absent voter ballots, a 96 percent return on the 2,043 applications mailed. City clerk Sue Halberstadt said there were no breakdowns in machines and voting went smoothly during the day. She said she received no complaints from voters despite long lines at the polls.

8:01 p.m. The polls have closed in Farmington and Farmington Hills, with late voters reporting long lines well into the evening hours. A number of polling places had more than 1,000 voters pass through today. Stay tuned to Farmington-Farmington Hills Patch throughout the night for the latest local news and election results.

2:50 p.m. Precincts 13 and 26 report more than 500 voters before noon today. Precinct 25 hit 600 voters just before 1 p.m., and Precinct 20 was well over 650 voters at around 1:30 p.m. Challengers for both parties are working polls in Farmington and Farmington Hills. Voters are reporting wait times that vary from as little as 15 minutes to an hour and a half. Precinct 14 at First Presbyterian Church at around 2 p.m. had very little wait and 219 voters.

8:45 a.m. Voter lines have been stretching outside of polling places since early this morning. Patch readers reported waits of 45 minutes to an hour at Forest Elementary, which is Preinct 3, Kenbrook Elementary, which is Precinct 10, and Faith Covenant Church, which is Precinct 4. As late as 8:40 a.m., the line at Farmington Community School, Precinct 26, was also moving slow.
