Farmington Hills to Host Green Expo

The event offers "family-friendly" green activities.

The is hosting a Green Expo on Saturday, June 18 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the City Hall campus at the corner of Eleven Mile and Orchard Lake Roads.  The free event will feature “eco-friendly” family fun with an emphasis on environmental awareness, sustainability, and energy efficiency. 

The Green Expo will showcase technologies used at City Hall such as solar panels, geothermal heating, and recycled materials. Environmental experts and local vendors will be available to help residents learn how to use these technologies to save money and energy in their own homes. City Hall will be open for self-guided tours with volunteers stationed throughout the building to help answer questions.

Highlights for families will include recycled craft projects, vendor give-aways, and presentations from the Farmington Hills Nature Discovery Center. Food and snacks will be available for a fee.

The Green Expo will offer the following interactive displays:

  • DTE Energy Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) charging station featuring a Ford Escape and Chevy Volt
  • Recycled products from RRRASOC (The Recycling Authority)
  • “Climb on” garbage truck from Waste Management
  • Native plant sale from Friends of the Rouge
  • Rain garden and composting tips from SOCWA
  • Recycled garden flower project from Peace, Love & Planet
  • Information on Consumers Energy and DTE Energy rebate programs
  • Home Energy Audits by Ecotelligent Homes

In addition, the Green Expo will include an on-site Rain Barrel sale sponsored by the Alliance of Rouge Communities (ARC). Rain barrels with a 55-gallon capacity will be available for $60 ($150 retail value). To pre-order by May 30 with a credit card, go to allianceofrougecommunities.com. Pre-ordered rain barrels may be picked up at the Green Expo.  A limited number will be available for cash sales only at the event.
