Farmington School Board Members Sworn Tuesday

The meeting, which also celebrated School Board Recognition Month, featured student performances.

board members elected Nov. 8, 2011 took their oaths of office during Tuesday's board study session, then enjoyed a celebration in their honor. 

Newcomer Murray Kahn, who won a 4-year term, and Karen Bolsen and Howard Wallach, each returned for a 6-year term, were sworn in by Judge Marla Parker. A change in state law that moves all school board elections to general elections in even-numbered years will add a year to each of their terms, Bolsen said. 

"Having raised three kids, I understand how a child's life is impacted by their school experience," Kahn said. "I will take this opportunity to add my perspective to the other board members with the intention of making the Farmington school system the premiere system in the state."

Kahn encouraged all Farmington and Farmington Hills citizens to get involved in the school system. 

Wallach noted his children, Jillian, a professional actress, and Shelby, a recent graduate of Michigan State University, were raised in the district. Shelby recently accepted her first professional position, with a local company.

"I'm not sharing this information with you simply as a proud father. I do it because I want for all of the children in this district the education my children received," he said. 

Bolsen thanked voters who returned her to a third term and said she looked forward to working with board members and district staff. 

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, officials received gifts of appreciation from students and were seranaded by Six Degrees North and Northern Lights, vocal ensembles from . District School/Community Relations Director Diane Bauman said the annual event recognizes the countless hours board members invest in their work and their dedication to students and the community.
