Farmington Officials: K2 Not Sold in City, State Legislation Needed

Officials considered, but will not enact, a ban on the synthetic drug also known as "spice".

Farmington city officials are joining their colleagues in Farmington Hills in deciding against a local ban on synthetic drugs tied to three recent Oakland County deaths. 

In a statement issued today, Farmington Public Safety Director Bob Schulz said police officers on Wednesday visited all Farmington gas stations and convenience stores and found none of them carry K2, known by other names including "spice". The blend of herbs is sprayed with synthetic compounds and used by teens to get high. 

The statement quoted Farmington Mayor Pro Tem Bill Galvin, who said, “As a parent of two teenagers, I am relieved of concern knowing that our public safety department is aggressively attacking this issue and our community business partners have voluntarily pulled these products from their shelves."

The drug could be tied to a deadly attack on the Cipriano family in Farmington Hills and the , and likely contributed to . Earlier this week, Farmington Hills city manager Steve Brock said Hills officials will consider a resolution supporting state and federal legislation. 

Today, banning the sale of the synthetic drugs. , , , Waterford Township and White Lake Township in Oakland County, the City of Detroit and  have either passed or are talking about bans.

Schulz's statement indicated that while city officials discussed an emergency ban, "Recognizing that no Farmington businesses are selling K2 and that legislation in the Michigan house and senate banning K2 synthetic drugs is imminent, the Farmington City Council will not take action on an emergency ordinance."

Officials urge passage of state legislation, the statement concluded.
